TAKE ME TO TOKYO
Large-scale tapestry series
In collaboration with renny & Reed
In 2020, Renny & Reed commissioned a suite of 30 large-scale hand-painted tapestries for the United States Equestrian Team Foundation’s “Take Me to Tokyo” gala, held in Wellington, Florida in anticipation of the Summer Olympics in Japan. The event brought more than 600 guests into a dramatically expanded tent structure—an open, double-height space that Renny & Reed filled with 3,000 square feet of custom murals, extensive bamboo installations, and thousands of gloriosa lilies. The tapestries formed a central visual element within this environment.
Drawing on traditional sumi-e ink painting, the series offered a playful, contemporary interpretation of the style. Japanese characters translating to “horse,” “Olympics,” and “gold” were incorporated into the compositions, creating a visual thread that linked the theme, the host country, and the U.S. equestrian team.
The evening featured a surprise performance by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, and ultimately raised over $1.5 million for the USET Foundation.
